Anthony Byrd, Sr. is entering his sixth season as the Boys Varsity Head Basketball Coach at James Irwin Charter High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In Byrd’s first five seasons, he helped guide the Jaguars to a 57-51 record. In the first season, the Jags were 11-3 in league play, winning the Tri-Peak East Championship with a 14-8 overall record. In his second season, the team went 10-4 in league play, taking 3rd place and 14-9 overall. Byrd was also named Tri-Peaks East Coach of the Year in 2013, his first year coaching.
Byrd began his collegiate career as a shooting guard at San Francisco Community College in San Francisco, California. He helped lead the team to the Regional playoffs in 1994 and 1995. In 1996, he transferred to Colorado State University in Pueblo (CSU-Pueblo) and helped lead the Thunderwolves to their first-ever RMAC National Tournament appearance in 1997. Byrd was named to the RMAC West division first team in 1997 and 1998, and he was also picked as Preseason All American both seasons.
Originally from Oakland, California, Byrd started his prep career playing basketball at McClymonds High School in Oakland, California. Slashing and driving his way to a 22 point per game average, Byrd was the leading scorer on the highest scoring team in the Bay Area. As a 6’3″ senior, Byrd, a force from the perimeter and off the dribble, helped lead the Warriors to an almost perfect 26-1 record before being upset by De La Salle in the Northern California finals.
Byrd and his wife, LaKisha, are the proud parents of one son, Anthony Jr. affectionately known as AJ, and one daughter, Ramiyah.
