Dear James Irwin Charter Middle School Parents and Students,

We appreciate your flexibility with yesterday’s closure as we were ensuring our students’ safety. Colorado Springs Police Department has completed an investigation and threat assessment and deemed it safe to hold school today. Therefore, despite any rumors you may hear concerning student safety, we will have school today, Thursday, August 11, from 7:45 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Doors will be open at 7:30 a.m. so students can enter the building. The activities and plans we had scheduled for Wednesday will be held today. Students will need to bring their lunch through August 25 since the district lunches will not begin until August 26. Federal lunch forms will be coming home with your student today.

Please be aware that our parking lot will be quite full due to construction on the high school parking lot, thus making it a necessity for high school staff to park on the middle school side. For safety, make sure to follow the traffic volunteers’ directions. Carpooling is strongly recommended. (High school parents and students are not permitted to park in the main elementary or middle school lots.)

We look forward to a great school year with a great group of teachers and even more opportunities for our students to get involved in leadership, areas of interest, and building our school community. All 7th & 8th grade students will receive a packet today with information about choosing their 10th period electives for the school year. (Please see the note about required math lab for some students as noted in the packet.) Elective request forms are due no later than 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16th, and are to be turned in to your student’s first teacher that day. Regular student schedules will be passed out to 7th & 8th grade students Tuesday morning as well. We will be running our Orientation schedule through Monday, August 15th.

Today I will be available as needed in the main hallway to meet and greet parents and answer any questions (that I am able to). We do ask that parents allow teachers to work with the students and to wait to have face-to-face discussions until a later time.

Feel free to contact me or our front office with any questions at 719-302-9108.

Sincerely,

Holly Varnum, Principal
